Sleep or die? Sounds serious. June 19 2015
CNN just published an article entitled, “Sleep or die – growing body of research warns of heart attacks, strokes.”
It is hard to overstate the importance of sleep to our overall health. It is a time of restoration and repair, when our body recovers from everything we’ve done the day before, and prepares us for the day to come.
Negative things start to happen to you when you don’t sleep enough:
- You tend to eat more. This involves the hormones ghrelin and leptin, which regulate your appetite (see the earlier blog post that explains this in more detail).
- You’re much more likely to be involved in a motor vehicle accident.
- Your memory isn’t as sharp, and neither are your cognitive skills.
It gets worse:
- You put a strain on your heart. This is one of the biggest issues with sleep apnea – every apnea sends your body into ‘fight or flight’ mode, pumping adrenaline into your system.
- This does a number on your blood pressure, also.
Everyone has different sleep needs, but 7 hours a night seems to be the cutoff for most everyone. And remember many of us need up to 9 hours. Every. Single. Night.
If you have been diagnosed with sleep apnea, be sure you’re getting enough sleep AND using your equipment every night.
